Mets rumors: David Wright offered seven-year contract

Alex Trautwig

The Mets have offered third baseman David Wright a seven-year contract extension "well in excess" of $100 million.

While it was previously reported that the New York Mets had offered third baseman David Wright a six-year, $100 million contract identical to the one Evan Longoria signed with the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News is now saying that the team has made a seven-year offer "well in excess" of $100 million.

Martino’s report is coming from industry sources who say negotiations between Wright and the Mets are ongoing.

The Mets exercised Wright’s $16 million team option for 2013, but the third baseman is currently set to hit the free agent market after next season. New York is reportedly weighing signing Wright and fellow free agent-to-be R.A. Dickey to contract extensions or shopping the pair of veterans.

After a disappointing and injury-marred 2011 campaign, Wright hit .306/.391/.492 with 41 doubles, two triple and 21 home runs last season. The 29-year-old owns a career line of .301/.381/.506.
