Russell Martin asking for four years, $9-$10 million per year

Brad Penner-US PRESSWIRE

The veteran catcher may be pricing himself out of New York.

Veteran catcher Russell Martin is seeking a four-year contract in the range of $9-$10 million per season, a source has told Andrew Marchand of ESPN:

The 29-year-old Martin has been in contract discussions with the Yankees all week, but if veteran catcher is truly seeking a four-year deal then he may have better luck elsewhere. New York is in the process of trying to bring their payroll below the $189 million luxury tax threshold by the 2014 season, and signing Martin to a lucrative, multi-year contract would make that goal exponentially more difficult for the team to accomplish.

The Rangers, Mariners, and Pirates have also shown interest in Martin, so he may have a better chance of receiving the roughly $40 million deal he wants with one of them.
