The Red Sox and Mariners appear to be the front-runners to sign the free-agent C/1B.
The Texas Rangers may be a distant third in the sweepstakes for free-agent catcher Mike Napoli, as Tuesday's reported meeting in Arlington never took place, reports T.R. Sullivan of MLB.com:
About that big meeting between Mike Napoli, his agent Brian Grieper and Rangers general manager Jon Daniels.
It did not come off on Tuesday as expected and prematurely reported...
At some point they are supposed to talk. It doesn’t seem like anything is imminent. Right now it appears that the Red Sox – who really want Napoli – and the Mariners have a much better chance of signing him.
The 31-year-old Napoli -- who is seeking a four-year contract -- met with Red Sox officials on Saturday and is believed to be the team's "No. 1 target". The Red Sox and Mariners view Napoli as an answer to their problems at 1B/DH, while the Rangers are in need of a full-time catcher.
The meeting between Napoli and the Rangers is now supposed to take place sometime Wednesday.
