The Oakland Athletics re-signed Bartolo Colon to a one-year, $3 million contract, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Colon was suspended for failing a drug test in August, and has five more games of the suspension to serve in 2013. Oakland already has six pitchers who will compete for rotation spots: Brett Anderson, Jarrod Parker, Tommy Milone, Dan Straily, A.J. Griffin and Travis Blackley.

After not pitching at all in 2010, Colon made a surprise comeback with the New York Yankees in 2011, going 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA. That performance got Colon a $2 million contract from Oakland. The 39-year-old was 10-9 with a 3.43 ERA and 3.96 strikeout-to-walk ratio before being suspended.

Despite the already crowded rotation, Slusser also reported the team is still interested in bringing back free agent Brandon McCarthy.

I am told, however, that Colon signing will not impact McCarthy's situation at all. #Athletics still have interest in McCarthy.
