It got a little ugly at one point, but the New York Mets have locked up their franchise player in David Wright, signing the superstar star third baseman to a franchise record $140 million extension, according to Ed Coleman on WFAN 660 (via Jon Heyman of CBS Sports).

If the contract is indeed for $140 million, it would be the largest deal in Mets franchise history, topping the $137.5 million contract given to left-handed starting pitcher Johan Santana. The contract is presumably for seven seasons, given everything reported in the contract negotiations, but that is unofficial.

At 29 years of age, Wright is coming off of an MVP caliber type season, batting .306/.391/.492 with 21 home runs and 15 stolen bases. With their franchise player locked in for the future, the Mets will now look to build a team around their superstar player.
