While the New York Yankees have a desire to re-sign catcher Russell Martin, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports notes the team has long "had interest" in free agent backstop David Ross:

The Yankees, who want to re-sign Russell Martin, long have had interest in another free-agent catcher, David Ross.

Rosenthal notes that it "seems unlikely" that the Yankees would sign both Martin and Ross, as they have a trio of potential backup catchers under contract in Chris Stewart, Austin Romine and Francisco Cervelli.

Martin just finished his second season in the Bronx, hitting .211/.311/.403 with 18 doubles and 21 home runs over 422 at-bats. While his line of .224/.317/.405 over two seasons with the Yankees isn’t overly impressive, he’s one of the top catching options available on a weak free agent market.

Ross has been a career backup, as he’s only registered more than 250 at-bats in a single season once over his 11 years in the majors. The 35-year-old, who owns a career line of .238/.324/.444, hit .256/.321/.449 with seven doubles and nine home runs over 176 at-bats for the Atlanta Braves this season.
