The New York Yankees are taking a slow approach to free agency and their own free agents, including right-hander Rafael Soriano and outfielder Nick Swisher, reports Jayson Stark of ESPN:

The Yankees have extended Soriano and Swisher qualifying offers, and they are waiting to see if either player accepts. Both players are rumored to be seeking multi-year contracts this winter, especially Swisher. Soriano opted out of his remaining contract with the Yankees in hopes of receiving a larger deal.

Swisher put together another productive campaign in 2012, hitting .272/.364/.473 with 36 doubles and 24 home runs. The 31-year-old, who owns a career line of .256/.361/.467, is said to be seeking a free agent deal this winter in the $100 million range, a commitment the Yankees are not expected to make.

Soriano was New York’s primary closer this season, replacing injured veteran Mariano Rivera. The right-hander maintained an ERA of 2.26 and compiled 42 saves over 69 appearances spanning 67 2/3 innings.
