Mets rumors: NY not close to deals with R.A. Dickey, David Wright

The Mets are “not close” to reaching a contract extension with right-hander R.A. Dickey or third baseman David Wright.

The New York Mets are "not close" to reaching a contract extension with right-hander R.A. Dickey or third baseman David Wright, reports Andy McCullough of The Star-Ledger:

Since then, one person with knowledge of the discussions indicated the Mets were "not close" to a resolution with either player. The person requested anonymity because neither side has commented publicly on the negotiations.

Last week the Mets exercised the 2013 options for both Dickey and Wright. Dickey is now set to earn $5 million next season, while New York is slated to pay Wright $16 million.

The Mets have expressed interest in retaining Wright and Dickey. However, if an extension can’t be reached the team is likely to explore trading the veteran players.

McCullough notes that Wright is believed to be seeking a contract "that could carry him up to retirement." Said deal would be in the seven- to eight-year range with an average annual salary upwards of $20 million.

Wright, who turns 30 in December, hit .306/.391/.492 with 41 doubles and 21 home runs over 581 at-bats last season. The 38-year-old Dickey maintained an ERA of 2.73 over 34 appearances, including 33 starts.
