Arizona Diamondbacks general manager Kevin Towers is “intrigued by the thought” of trading outfielder Justin Upton in exchange for “a mother lode of talent.”
Several people we spoke to said GM Kevin Towers is intrigued by the thought of moving Upton and getting a mother lode of talent in return.
While some general managers would be nervous to trade an outfielder with Upton’s talent and track record, Crasnick notes that Towers is the "rare GM with the chutzpah to move a budding superstar."
One unnamed National League assistant GM told Crasnick that he believes the Diamondbacks are "motivated to move" Upton in order to change the culture of their clubhouse. The unnamed assistant added that Arizona has "a ton" of outfield depth.
Even after trading veteran outfielder Chris Young to the Oakland Athletics, the Diamondbacks still have Jason Kubel and Gerardo Parra to go along with prospects Adam Eaton and A.J. Pollock. Towers could also look to acquire an outfielder in any trade involving Upton.
Upton hit .280/.355/.430 with 24 doubles and 17 home runs over 554 at-bats this season. The 25-year-old owns a career line of .278/.357/.475 over six seasons at the major league level.
