The Toronto Blue Jays have signed free agent infielder Maicer Izturis to a three-year, $9 million contract that includes a $3 million club option for a fourth year, the team has announced
Izturis has spent the past eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels. He was signed by the Cleveland Indians as an amateur free agent and was traded twice, once with Ryan Church and once for Jose Guillen, before ending up with the Angels.
Izturis has never started more than 78 games in one season at any one position, but he’s played regularly for Los Angeles while manning second base, shortstop and third base. The 32-year-old hit .256/.320/.315 with 11 doubles and two home runs over 289 at-bats last season and owns a career line of .273/.337/.381.
While still under the $10 million mark in terms of total value, Izturis’ new contract with the Blue Jays represents the largest contract handed out by general manager Alex Antopoulos.
