The Philadelphia Phillies are seeking to sign a low-risk, high-reward type player to fill out the back-end of their starting rotation.

The Philadelphia Phillies are seeking to sign a low-risk, high-reward type player to fill out the back-end of their starting rotation, reports Matt Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

"We'll probably look to add a low-risk, high-reward type of guy, or somebody's who's come back from an injury, or someone like that who can battle for that fifth spot," Amaro said Sunday. "A lot of teams have had some success looking for that guy late in the season and finding that productive guy. So that's one possibility."

The final spot in the Phillies rotation opened up earlier this month when they traded Vance Worley to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for center fielder Ben Revere.

While the Phillies have several young and talented starting pitchers, including Jonathan Pettibone, Tyler Cloyd, Adam Morgan, and Ethan Martin, none of them are "proven or considered a top prospect, which probably will prompt a cheap addition from elsewhere," according to Gelb.

Gelb adds that Phillies fans should forget some of the more well known starting pitching targets available on the free agent market, such as Ryan Dempster, Edwin Jackson or Shaun Marcum, and instead expect someone like Joe Saunders, Chris Young, Carl Pavano, Derek Lowe, John Lannan, Jair Jurrjens, Kevin Millwood, and Chien-Ming Wang.
