Cardinals sign Ty Wigginton to 2-year deal

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The veteran utilityman goes to St. Louis for around $5 million.

The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free-agent infielder/outfielder Ty Wigginton to a two-deal deal in the range of $5 million, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The 35-year-old veteran will give the Cardinals a righty bat and some much-needed depth on the infield in case the oft-injured David Freese finds himself on the disabled again.

An 11-year big-league vet, Wigginton is a career .263/.324/.438 hitter and has averaged 128 games played and 16 home runs a season over the past five years. Wigginton's batting average and on-base numbers have declined over the past four seasons, but his power has mostly remained in tact.

Wigginton at one time received a significant amount of playing time at second base, but has been relegated to mostly corner infield/outfield duty in the past several seasons, where his defensive numbers are not great at best.

The Cardinals are the righty slugger's ninth big-league organization. As always, the deal is still pending a physical.
