Tigers listening on Drew Smyly

With a full rotation, Detroit may look to deal one of its lesser starters.

Now that they have inked right-handed starter Anibal Sanchez to a five-year, $80 million pact, CBS Sports' Danny Knobler reports that the Detroit Tigers are opening their telephone lines to hear offers for one of their other starters, left-hander Drew Smyly. The Tigers have a bevvy of quality starters, and the team is also rumoured to be shopping Rick Porcello.

The 23-year-old Smyly bounced between Triple-A Toledo and the Tigers during the 2012 season, working both as a starter and a reliever while dealing with blisters and a strained intercostal muscle. When healthy, the southpaw spun 99.1 major-league innings, giving up 93 hits and 33 walks while striking out 94, good for a 3.78 FIP.

He did have some difficulty keeping the ball inside the ballpark despite playing his home games in pitcher-friendly Comerica Park. However, he struck out 8.5 batters per nine innings.

Smyly's fastball sits around 92 mph, and he complements the four-seamer with a cutter, slider, and changeup while occasionally mixing in a sinker.
