Phillies interested in Wells, Ross

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The Phillies have been looking to upgrade their outfield, and are reportedly looking at Cody Ross and Vernon Wells.

The Phillies are looking at Cody Ross and Vernon Wells to upgrade their outfield, reports Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Wells, 34, has played for the Angels and Blue Jays over the course of his career. He was swapped to the Angels for catcher Mike Napoli after the 2010 season. Wells was replaced in the line-up by rookie phenom Mike Trout, and was never able to regain his starting spot. The Angels' outfield situation became even less clear when they signed free agent Josh Hamilton.

Ross, 31, is coming off a career-year in which he hit 22 home runs while hitting his way to an OPS of .807. The corner outfielder was replaced in Boston by the signing of Shane Victorino, and has been involved in rumors involving the Mets, and now the Phillies.

The Phillies are currently slated to have Darin Ruf in left field, and Domonic Brown in right. They already traded for center fielder Ben Revere, and appear to be going all-in for 2013.

The Yankees were also rumored to be interested in Wells, but it is safe to assume that the only way that the Angels could dump his contract would be by eating most of his salary.
