Rosenthal notes that Ross had dinner with team officials, including general manager Jon Daniels and manager Ron Washington.
Texas has missed out on several high-profile players this winter, as they’ve watched Josh Hamilton sign with the Los Angeles Angels and Zack Greinke with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The club has also not been able to land Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton through trade.
The Rangers also recently met with free agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
Beyond the Rangers, the Philadelphia Phillies, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles have all been tied to Ross so far this offseason. He’s reportedly asking for a free agent contract in the range of three years and $25 million.
Last season with the Red Sox, Ross hit .267/.326/.481 with 34 doubles, one triple and 22 home runs. The 31-year-old owns a career line of .262/.324/.460 over nine years at the major league level.
