Marlins sign Placido Polanco

Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

Miami has reportedly found their answer at third base for next season.

UPDATE 11:45am ET: The Marlins have come to an agreement with Polanco, confirms Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. His $2.75 million contract includes performance incentives that could boost the total salary.

__________

ORIGINAL: The Miami Marlins plan to sign veteran third baseman Placido Polanco to a one-year, $2.75 million contract, contingent on the passing of a physical, reports Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald:

The Marlins plan to sign veteran third baseman Placido Polanco to a one-year, $2.75 million if he passes medical tests, an industry source said.

Polanco, who has been bothered by back problems in the past year, was among the most accomplished free agent third basemen remaining in a group of players largely past their prime.

The Marlins have had a rough go of it in their search for a replacement for Yunel Escobar, who was traded to the Tampa Bay Rays last month. It was reported yesterday that the club was very "unhappy" with the hot corner market and had gone so far as to scout veteran Miguel Tejada -- who did not play in the majors in 2012 -- in the Dominican winter league.

Polanco, 37, hit .257/.302/.327 with two home runs over 90 games in an injury-plagued season for the Phillies this past year. The veteran infielder had put up serviceable numbers in Philadelphia the previous two years -- even earning an All-Star nod in 2011 -- but his bat disappeared in 2012.

A 15-year big-league veteran, Polanco is a career .299/.344/.403 hitter with 103 home runs.
