Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE
A summary of all the recent news and notes surrounding the Seattle Mariners.
Here's a recap of the latest news coming from the Emerald City:
- The Mariners acquired DH/1B Kendrys Morales from the Angels in exchange for left-hander Jason Vargas earlier this month. The loss of Vargas leaves the rotation a little sparse, but Morales gives Seattle the middle-of-the-order hitter they have been seeking.
- The addition of Morales gives the M's a bit of a logjam at DH/1B, which could mean that another trade is in the works. The Baltimore Orioles have shown interest in 1B Justin Smoak, but it is unclear what they could offer the Mariners in return.
- The club signed veteran outfielder Raul Ibanez to a one-year, $2.75 million deal. This will be Ibanez's third time as a Mariner, having already had two separate five-year stints in Seattle. The M's designated young right-hander D.J. Mitchell for assignment to make room for Ibanez on the roster.
- Even with the return of Ibanez, Seattle is still on the prowl for an outfielder, as well as pitching help. General manager Jack Zduriencik says the club is "wide open" in their search for new additions. They have been tied to Tigers right-hander Rick Porcello and were thought to be in talks to acquire outfielder Brennan Boesch.
