Veteran right-hander Javier Vazquez is considering making a comeback and returning to Major League Baseball, reports Ralph Pagan Archeval of ESPN Deportes (translated via Google):
"I kept training, and that is my lifestyle," said ESPNDeportes.com input when he questioned the reasons for his return to winter ball. "And with the Classic now, also I wanted to pitch for Puerto Rico again. I hope it's the last time and so I'm getting ready," said the 36-year-old pitcher looks in great physical condition.
If he were to return to the majors, Vazquez would be looking to join a contender. He’s currently with Puerto Rico’s Ponce Lions and is planning on pitching for the country in the World Baseball Classic in March. The 36-year-old has said that he won’t make a decision on a comeback to MLB until after the WBC.
Vazquez was pursued by multiple teams last offseason after he posted an ERA of 3.69 with 7.6 strikeouts and 2.3 walks over 32 starts for the Miami Marlins. Even including his disappointing 2010 season with the New York Yankees, during which he posted an ERA of 5.32 over 31 appearances, Vazquez maintained an ERA of 3.83 from 2009-11.
The 14-year veteran owns a career ERA of 4.22 with 8.0 strikeouts and 2.4 walks per nine innings.
