Rangers rumors: Texas must choose between Zack Greinke, Josh Hamilton

Jamie Squire

The club certainly isn't faced with Sophie's Choice, but it's still a tough one.

The Texas Rangers are among the front-runners to sign both Zack Greinke and Josh Hamilton as the winter meetings hit the home-stretch, but likely do not have the resources available to sign both, reports Danny Knobler of CBS Sports:

The Rangers are trying hard for Zack Greinke,.. They're still very involved with Josh Hamilton.

They've considered other scenarios, including trying to trade for Rays pitcher James Shields.

But one scenario they don't see happening, according to sources, is a double free-agent signing of both Greinke and Hamilton.

The bidding war for the 29-year-old Greinke is reportedly over $160 million at the moment, while Hamilton's price tag is around $25 million a year. The Rangers have proven over the past several years that they do not shy away from spending, but potentially adding upwards of $40 million to their 2013 payroll for two players -- especially when the club is looking at contract extensions for players like left-hander Matt Harrison -- may be too much.

The Rangers are reported to be competing head-to-head with the Los Angeles Dodgers for Greinke's services. Several clubs have checked in on Hamilton, but his market has yet to develop much beyond the Rangers, who are believed to have offered a four-year contract to the slugger.
