Mets rumors: Vinnie Pestano not on radar

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

New York is not pursuing the Indians' right-hander, despite an earlier rumor to the contrary.

The New York Mets are still looking to add a reliever to their bullpen but are not in pursuit of Cleveland Indians right-hander Vinnie Pestano, reports Adam Rubin of ESPN:

A different source had told Rubin earlier Tuesday evening that the right-hander was being pursued as an answer to the Mets' late-inning relief issues, but it appears that information was incorrect.

Pestano, 27, posted a 2.57 ERA and struck out 9.8 per nine in 70 innings as Cleveland's setup man in 2012. The right-handed sinkerballer is still a pre-arb player, putting him under team control for another four seasons.

New York has not had much luck finding an addition to their bullpen this offseason. The club was initially interested in right-hander Joel Peralta, but thought his asking price was too high before he went on to sign a two-year, $6 million deal with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Mets have also been in talks with the Kansas City Royals about a couple of their young bullpen arms, but have yet to make any headway.
