Braves sign Reed Johnson

The Atlanta Braves have signed outfielder Reed Johnson to a one-year contract.

The Atlanta Braves have signed outfielder Reed Johnson to a one-year contract, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com:

Johnson's contract will pay him a 2013 base salary of $1.6 million with another $150k available in incentives, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. The deal also includes a $1.6 million team option for the following season with a $150k buyout.

Johnson started the 2012 season as a member of the Chicago Cubs, after signing as a free agent with the club in Dec. of 2011, but he was traded to the Atlanta Braves along with starting pitcher Paul Maholm in exchange for Jaye Chapman and Arodys Vizcaino.

Johnson got off to a hot start with the Cubs last season, as he hit .302/.355/.444 with nine doubles, three triples and three home runs over 169 at-bats. He wasn’t quite as productive after the trade to Atlanta, as he hit .270/.305/.320 with five doubles over 100 at-bats.

The 35-year-old manned all three outfield positions last season for the Braves and Cubs. Over 10 seasons at the major league level he owns a respectable career line of .284/.340/.411, but he’s been primarily a reserve player for the last several years.
