The Pittsburgh Pirates could have a draft pool smaller than expected, according to Jim Callis and Bucs Dugout projections. It looks like the mystery is around whether or not the Bucs will be getting a comp pick for Derrek Lee, but the fans might have a right to be upset if the the club loses one of its few advantages (the willingness to invest in scouting) heading into the draft.

In other Pirates notes, the team put Gustavo Nunez on the 60-day DL to make room for fresh-off-the-trade A.J. Burnett, and the team will have a few options to fill out its rotation now that Burnett makes six pitchers vying for five spots:

  "As part of the new Collective Bargaining Agreement, teams are now assigned an aggregate signing bonus pool for their picks in the first 10 rounds of the draft. Each has a predetermined value, from $7.2 million for the No. 1 choice to $125,000 for pick No. 300 and any subsequent."

  The Baseball America reporting that came out earlier today only includes one comp pick, since Derrek Lee hasn't signed yet, but obviously, there's no way to make up the difference between $6.6 million and $10 million with one comp pick. We'll see if the BA reporting is wrong, or if Connolly was wrong. Jim Callis is normally really reliable, obviously.
