The Chicago Cubs claimed reliever Jairo Asencio off of waivers from the Cleveland Indians, according to ESPN’s Keith Law. In order to make room for Asencio on their roster, the Cubs designated Michael Bowden for assignment.

Asencio, who was acquired from the Atlanta Braves this spring, appeared in 18 games for the Indians. Over his 25 2/3 innings pitched, Asencio posted an ERA and WHIP of 5.96 and 1.364 with 7.4 SO/9 and 2.8 BB/9. The 28-year-old has a career 6.05 ERA and 1.578 WHIP over his three seasons in the majors.

The Cubs acquired Bowden, 25, and Hunter Cervenka from the Boston Red Sox in late April in exchange for Marlon Byrd. A former first round pick, Bowden was a highly regarded starting pitching prospect with the Red Sox through the 2009 season.

While he was used primarily as a starter during his time in the minors, Bowden has spent the majority of his time pitching out of the ‘pen at the major league level. Over his 12 appearances with the Cubs and Red Sox this season, Bowden maintained an ERA and WHIP of 6.39 and 1.737.
