The Minnesota Twins are close to signing first-round draft pick Byron Buxton, reports Joe Christensen of the Star Tribune. The second-overall draft pick is scheduled to take a physical on Monday.
Many projected Buxton to go first-overall to the Astros, but fortunately for Minnesota, Houston surprised many by taking Carlos Correa. ESPN's Keith Law absolutely loves the high school outfielder, there is a reason he had him as the top prospect in this year's draft after all, saying he's "an explosive runner with bat speed and a young Eric Davis-type body; several scouts told me the future grades on their reports on him were all 70s and 80s."
MLB's recommended slot bonus for the second-overall pick is $6.2 million. The Twins do have a pair of other players they selected in the first round, so any money they can save on Buxton can be used to sign other high draft picks.
