Minnesota Twins outfielder Josh Willingham remains one of the most sough-after right-handed hitters on the market, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Cafardo adds that the Twins haven’t currently reached the point where they will sell off assets like Willingham and fellow slugger Justin Morneau. Before losing last night to the Chicago Cubs, the Twins had won three games in a row and nine of their last 12.
Still, Minnesota finds itself in the basement of the American League Central and 8 ½ games out of first place. Cafardo speculates that because there is a big buyers’ market out there, Twins general manager Terry Ryan has a great chance to cash in and get the package of young players he’s looking for.
Willingham signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Twins this December after tallying 29 home runs, 26 doubles and 98 RBIs with the Oakland Athletics in 2011.
On the season, Willingham is hitting at a clip of .289/.409/.558 for the Twins; leading the club in home runs (11), RBIs (41) and OPS (.968).
