The Washington Nationals have designated right-handed reliever Brad Lidge for assignment, reports Steven Miller of MLB.com. To replace Lidge on their roster, the Nationals activated right-hander Ryan Mattheus from the 15-day disabled list.

The Nationals signed Lidge to a one-year, $1 million deal this January in hopes that the veteran would become a late-inning reliever for the club.

After striking out four batters and collecting a save over his first two scoreless innings of works, things went south for the 35-year-old.

Lidge hit the DL toward the end of April with an ERA of 5.14. After he was activated in early June, the right-hander allowed six earned runs over his 2 1/3 innings of work this month with four walks and three strikeouts.

On the year, Lidge has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 9.64 and 2.464 with 11 walks and 10 strikeouts over his 9 1/3 innings of work.
