The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that right-handed starting pitcher Kyle Drabek will undergo Tommy John surgery today, reports Barry Davis of Sportsnet. This will mark the second time Drabek has had Tommy John surgery, the first coming while he was still in high school.

Drabek hit the Blue Jays disabled list Friday with a UCL sprain in his throwing elbow. The 24-year-old was removed during the fifth inning of his start last Wednesday against the Washington Nationals after feeling a popping sensation in his elbow.

It is expected that Drabek will be sidelined for about a year following the procedure.

The Blue Jays acquired Drabek from the Philadelphia Phillies in the Roy Halladay trade. After making his major league debut in 2010, Drabek spent last season pitching for the Blue Jays and their Triple-A affiliate. This spring he broke camp as a member of Toronto’s starting rotation.

Over his 13 starts spanning 71 1/3 innings, Drabek maintained an ERA and WHIP of 4.67 and 1.598 with 5.9 SO/9 and 5.9 BB/9.
