In a corresponding roster move, the Phillies called up left-hander Jeremy Horst.
Qualls spent the season with the Phillies after signing a free agent contract with the club in January. After a so-so April, the 33-year-old allowed eight runs, seven earned, over his 10 1/3 innings pitched in May.
Qualls had put together nine consecutive scoreless appearances before allowing three runs on three hits and a walk over his inning of work last night. He becomes the second reliever removed from the roster that struggled in last night’s contest against the Pittsburgh Pirates, as the Phillies demoted left-hander Joe Savery to Triple-A.
Horst made his major league debut with the Cincinnati Reds last season, posting an ERA and WHIP of 2.93 and 1.565 over his 15 1/3 innings. The 26-year-old has maintained an ERA and WHIP of 2.11 and 1.591 with 7.5 SO/9 and 4.2 BB/9 with the Phillies Triple-A affiliate this season.
