The Oakland Athletics designated first baseman Kila Ka’aihue for assignment and placed right-hander Andrew Carignan on their 15-day disabled list. In corresponding roster moves, the A’s called up outfielder Brandon Moss and right-hander Evan Scribner from Triple-A Sacramento.

Ka’aihue struggled this season, his first with the A’s. Over his 39 games and 128 at-bats, Ka’aihue hit at a clip of .234/.295/.398 with 13 extra-base hits and 14 RBIs. Oakland acquired Ka’aihue from the Kansas City Royals last September. The 28-year-old has a career OPS of .687 over his four seasons with the Royals and A’s.

Carignan has a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his elbow which is likely to require Tommy John surgery. The 25-year-old has appeared in 11 games for the A’s this season, posting an ERA and WHIP of 4.66 and 1.862 over his 9 2/3 innings pitched.

Moss and Scribner have been playing for Oakland’s Triple-A affiliate this season. Over his 196 plate-appearances Moss has maintained an OPS of .952 with 27 extra-base hits and 33 RBIs. Moss has spent five seasons in the bigs and sports a career OPS of .682 at the major league level.

Scribner has pitched out of Triple-A Sacramento’s bullpen this year, posting an ERA and WHIP of 3.31 and 0.980 with 9.6 SO/9 and 2.5 BB/9. Scribner made his major league debut last season with the San Diego Padres, allowing 11 earned runs over his 14 innings pitched.
