Houston Astros closer Brett Myers will have his $10 million option for 2013 vest if he finishes 45 games and doesn’t end the season on the disabled list, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Morosi adds that a number of contenders will be in the market for relief help leading up to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, including possibly the Boston Red Sox, Miami Marlins, Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals and Toronto Blue Jays.

Morosi adds that, according to a major league source, finishing 45 games this season isn’t the only way for Myers to guarantee his contract for next year. Myers’ amended contract with the Astros includes a point system that would allow the option to vest through other qualifications. However, Morosi notes that the games finished stipulation is Myers’ most attainable path.

Earlier this week, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports speculated that Myers’ vesting option for 2013 could impact his trade value this summer. According to Morosi’s report and Myers’ current pace, it appears that the right-hander will reach the 45 games finished-plateau if he continues to be used as a closer.

While this was something that turned teams off to acquiring Francisco Rodriguez last season, Morosi spoke to one rival executive that said Myers’ 2013 option isn’t that scary.

Since taking over as the Astros closer this season, Myers has posted an ERA and WHIP of 2.25 and 0.900 over his 20 innings pitched. The 31-year-old is making $11 million this season and his contract includes a $3 million buyout for 2013 if his option doesn’t vest.
