New York Mets right-hander Dillon Gee will have shoulder surgery on Friday that could sideline him for the rest of the season, a source has told Adam Rubin of ESPN.

After doctors dissolved a clot but determined Gee's artery was damaged, he was presented with the option of using blood thinners for the near future, but that was riskier. So Gee has opted to have a procedure performed by leading specialist Dr. Robert Thompson at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, the source said.

Gee was hospitalized and placed on the 15-day DL on Monday after experiencing numbness in his right hand. After extensive testing a blood clot was found in an artery in his shoulder, which doctors immediately broke up with a small procedure using a catheter.

The Friday surgery will repair arterial damage in his shoulder in the hopes of avoiding future clots. Gee is expected to resume throwing six to eight weeks after the surgery, but will not return to the team until late September at the earliest.

The 26-year-old right-hander owns a 4.10 ERA in 17 starts this year, striking out 97 batters in 107 2/3 innings of work.
