In a corresponding roster move, the A’s activated veteran right-hander Bartolo Colon from the 15-day disabled list.
Fuentes had been a player rumored to be available this summer, but the A’s decided to designate rather than hold onto to their trade chip. The 36-year-old’s 10 earned runs allowed over his 5 1/3 June innings certainly didn’t help his cause.
Fuentes never seemed to get comfortable pitching for Oakland, who signed him prior to the 2011 campaign. On the season, Fuentes maintained an ERA and WHIP of 6.84 and 1.600 with 6.5 SO/9 and 3.6 BB/9. Over his two years with the A’s, he posted marks of 4.64 and 1.344.
Prior to his activation, Colon was dealing with an oblique injury. The 39-year-old rejoined the A’s rotation last night, helping his club to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox by allowing a single earned run on five hits and a walk over his six innings of work.
