Rangers pitcher Neftali Feliz has been diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament and will undergo Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery on Wednesday. He will miss the rest of the season and much of 2013.
The surgery will sideline Feliz for the remainder of the 2012 season and at least half of the 2013 campaign. Sullivan notes that the 24-year-old could be ready to rejoin the Rangers at the end of next season, though he likely won’t be back to full strength until 2014.
After compiling 72 saves during the 2010-11 seasons, Feliz made the jump from closer to starter this off-season. Feliz made seven starts for the Rangers this year before hitting the disabled list in the middle of May with a sprained right elbow.
He went on to appear in three minor league rehab games, but was shut down due to soreness in his throwing elbow. After the injury was examined, the UCL tear was diagnosed.
Is the Rangers current rotation good enough to make a third consecutive World Series?
