A day after he suffered a strained right oblique muscle, Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal landed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday.
He's hopeful that he won't need any more time than the allotted 15 days on the DL before he can start playing again.
The young catcher suffered the injury while swinging in the second inning of Monday's 11-5 victory over the Reds. Grandal looked to be in visible pain and was immediately pulled from the game, but told Brock on Tuesday that his soreness had subsided.
Grandal, 23, is hitting .312/.349/.597 with five home runs through his first 24 major league games.
The Padres have recalled catcher Eddy Rodriguez from Single-A to fill Grandal's spot on the roster, but veteran John Baker will take over primary catching duties for San Diego.
Will Grandal be a Rookie of the Year candidate at season's end?
