Like veterans Derek Lowe and Johnny Damon, the Cleveland Indians have released infielder Jose Lopez, according to Jordan Bastian of MLB.com. The move comes five days after the team designated Lopez for assignment and recalled Frank Herrmann to take the utility infielder's roster spot.

The Indians could have traded Lopez, but it appears the team was unable to find a taker. Another option for the team was an outright of Lopez to the minor leagues, but Lopez would have to approve such a transaction.

The 28-year-old Lopez struggled at the plate this year and a triple slash line of .249/.272/.366 in 224 plate appearances was one of his worst seasons at the plate. As a free agent, Lopez will now be looking to join a different organization, but will likely have to settle for a non-guaranteed minor league deal.
