The Pittsburgh Pirates activated veteran right-hander Juan Cruz from the disabled list yesterday, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:

#Pirates activate Juan Cruz from DL, option Jared Hughes to Triple-A Indy
To make room on their roster for Cruz, the Pirates optioned right-hander Jared Hughes to Triple-A.
Cruz had been out since the middle of July while dealing with a elbow injury. The 33-year-old logged an inning for the Pirates yesterday, allowing one hit and no runs.
On the season, Cruz maintained an ERA of 2.53 over thirty-eight appearances spanning thirty-two innings with 9.0 SO/9 and 4.8 BB/9. He owns a career ERA of 4.05.
Hughes appeared in forty-seven games for the Pirates this season, posting an ERA of 2.70 with 5.1 SO/9 and 2.9 BB/9. The 27-year-old owns a career ERA of 2.93 at the major league level over sixty-seven and two-thirds innings.
