The Kansas City Royals have requested unconditional release waivers on infielder Yuniesky Betancourt, according to Bob Dutton The Kansas City Star.

The team had designated the veteran infielder for assignment on August 5, starting a 10 day clock for the team to trade, release or outright (with Betancourt's consent) to the minor leagues. However, there was no incentive for any team to make a trade for Betancourt when he could be signed for less money via free agency.

Betancourt batted an abysmal .228/.256/.400 in 228 plate appearances over 57 games with the Royals this year. He is now a free agent and free to sign with any team, but is likely looking at a non-guaranteed deal because of his extremely poor play at the plate. According to WAR (Wins Above Replacement), Betancourt gave the Royals negative (!) value.
