To replace Betemit on their roster, the Orioles have recalled first baseman Joe Mahoney from Triple-A.
Betemit hasn’t appeared for the Orioles since Saturday, and it’s been announced that he’s dealing with a small tear in the cartilage in his right wrist as well as a bone bruise. He is expected to rejoin Baltimore before the end of the regular season.
The O’s signed Betemit to a two-year $2.75 million contract this off-season, and the 30-year-old became a fixture in Baltimore’s lineup. He’s started most of his games at third or first base, but he’s also seen time as a corner outfielder. Over 329 at-bats, he’s hit .264/.327/.429 with eighteen doubles and twelve home runs.
Mahoney, 25, made his major league debut earlier this season, appearing in one game for the Orioles. The 6-foot-6 first baseman has also hit .263/.317/.390 with twenty-seven doubles and nine home runs for the club’s Triple-A affiliate.
