The Chicago Cubs have claimed left-handed pitcher Alex Hinshaw off of outright waivers from the San Diego Padres, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com. The Padres designated Hinshaw for assignment just a few days ago, which started a 10 day clock for the Padres to trade, release or outright Hinshaw to the minor leagues.
It appears they choose to outright the southpaw with the hopes of keeping him in the organization, but the Cubs spoiled their plans. The move was made in order to clear a roster spot for the call up of left-handed handed pitcher Tom Layne from Class Double-A San Antonio.
The 6-foot-2 southpaw posted a 4.50 ERA across 28 complete innings of work, with a fantastic 11.6 K/9 but not-so-fantastic 6.4 BB/9.The Californian native did well against left-handed batters, but struggled against right-handed batters.
