The San Diego Padres have announced that they will call up top pitching prospect Casey Kelly to make his major league debut Monday night against the Atlanta Braves, reports Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com:
It's official.
— Jesse Sanchez (@JesseSanchezMLB) August 26, 2012#Padres prospect Casey Kelly will make his big league debut Monday.
Kelly, 22, entered the season ranked as the seventy-sixth-best prospect in baseball by Baseball America. He spent last season pitching for the Padres’ Double-A affiliate, posting an ERA of 3.98 with 6.6 SO/9 and 2.9 BB/9 over twenty-seven starts.
A strained right elbow has caused Kelly to make only eight starts this season, but he’s been solid in the appearances he's registered. He’s maintained an ERA and WHIP of 3.35 and 0.956 with 9.3 SO/9 and 0.7 BB/9 over thirty-seven and two-thirds innings.
Kelly was one of the key players sent to the Padres by the Boston Red Sox in exchange for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez in December 2010. He will be taking over Jason Marquis’ spot in San Diego’s rotation.
