Prior to tonight's game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Texas Rangers designated infielder Luis Hernandez for assignment, Rangers executive VP of communications John Blake announced (via Twitter). The move was made in order to clear a roster spot for infielder Michael Young, who is being reinstated from the paternity list.

The 28-year-old Hernandez appeared in two games this year with the Rangers big league club before being DFA'd off of their 40-man roster. In those two games, Hernandez went 0-for-2. It was the first time Hernandez saw big league action since 2010.
The Rangers will now have ten days to trade, release or outright Hernandez to the minor leagues. The last of the three may be the most likely, considering Hernandez has played virtually the entire year with Texas' Class Triple-A affiliate.
