To make room on their roster for their newest starting pitcher, the Orioles optioned right-hander Jake Arrieta to Triple-A.
Baltimore acquired Saunders and cash in the trade that sent right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom to Arizona. Over his twenty-one starts for the Diamondbacks, the 31-year-old maintained an ERA of 4.22 with 6.2 SO/9 and 2.1 BB/9.
With right-hander Chris Tillman slated to pitch tonight, Saunders is expected to start Wednesday or Thursday, with lefty Zach Britton set to take the hill whatever night Saunders doesn’t.
The Orioles Opening Day starter, Arrieta has struggled immensely this season. Over eighteen starts for Baltimore, the 26-year-old has maintained an ERA of 6.13 with 7.9 SO/9 and 2.8 BB/9.
