To make room on their roster for Dirks, the Tigers designated utility player Don Kelly for assignment.
Dirks has been on the DL since the end of May while dealing with an Achilles injury. Prior to his injury, the 26-year-old was hitting .328/.379/.515 with nine doubles and four home runs over 134 at-bats.
Before rejoining the Tigers, Dirks spent 10 games in the minors rehabbing his injury. Over 37 at-bats for the club’s Triple-A affiliate, Dirks collected eight hits, including a double and two home runs.
Kelly only posted a line of .175/.267/.243 with four extra-base hits over 103 at-bats this season. The 32-year-old manned all defensive positions other than shortstop and catcher for Detroit over 64 games.

Will Dirks be able to pick up where he left off prior to his injury?
