Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Juan Pierre has cleared waivers, making him eligible to be traded to any team, reports Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.com.
Morosi adds that Pierre could be dealt by midnight tonight. The reason this timeframe is significant is that if he is added to a team’s roster by midnight, he will be able to play for that team in the postseason. If a trade isn’t completed before the calendar changes to September, he won’t be eligible to be on an acquiring team’s postseason roster.
Prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, Pierre drew interest from the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles. He’s also been speculated to be a potential fit for the San Francisco Giants since they lost outfielder Melky Cabrera to his drug suspension. The Giants are a possibility, but reports state the club is seeking a right-handed hitter, while Pierre bats from the left side.
On the season, Pierre has hit .300/.343/.363 with eight doubles, five triples and one home run over 333 at-bats for the Phillies.
