The Philadelphia Phillies have unconditionally released infielder Mike Fontenot, the team has announced (via Danny Knobler of CBS Sports). The move comes just a few days after the Phillies designated Fontenot for assignment and replaced him with an internal option in Michael Martinez.

The 32-year-old Fontenot batted .289/.343/.340 in 105 plate appearances scattered over 47 games for the Phillies this year. The veteran infielder was barely an upgrade over the average replacement-level player, evident with Fontenot accumulating 0.2 fWAR (FanGraphs' Win Above Replacement) in 47 games.

Now a free agent, Fontenot will be looking to do what other veterans in a similar position search for: opportunity to sign a minor league deal with the hopes of sticking with that organization for the remainder of the year.
