The Oakland Athletics made a series of roster moves yesterday, placing rookie right-hander A.J. Griffin on the disabled list, optioning outfielder Michael Taylor to Triple-A and promoting relievers Evan Scribner and Pedro Figueroa, reports Ben Estes of MLB.com:

The 24-year-old Griffin was pulled in the second inning of his Saturday start after experiencing tightness in his shoulder. MRIs taken during the game revealed no damage in the shoulder, but Oakland placed young righty on the 15-day DL as a precaution.

Griffin has a 2.42 ERA and 7.0 K/9 in eight starts for the A's. Brandon McCarthy, who is finishing up rehab for a shoulder injury of his own, will likely start in Griffin's place later this week.

Because of Griffin's extremely shortened start on Saturday and the fifteen-inning marathon on Friday night, which saw the Oakland relief corps pitch eighteen and a third innings, the A's called upon Scribner and Figueroa to get fresh arms in the bullpen.

The righty Scribner and the lefty Figueroa have both performed well in short stints with the club this season. Scribner, 27, owns a 1.93 ERA in twelve appearances while Figueroa holds a 1.50 ERA in nine appearances.

The 26-year-old Taylor was hitting just .143/.143/.190 in six games.

Will Oakland's strong young pitching lead them to a playoff spot?
