New York Yankees vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman told ESPN New York's Andrew Marchand the team will be shutting down top prospect Manny Banuelos because of a bone bruise in his left elbow. The injury will not require surgery, according to Newman and the hope is Banuelos will be ready to play in Winter Ball and spring training next year.

"He'll recover from this," Newman said. "That's what our doctors say. We have no doubt about it. At this point, there is no reason to push it. We are trying to be as prepared as we can for next season."

The 21-year-old southpaw has not pitched since mid-May and has dealt with other injuries this season as well, which have limited him to just six starts on the year.

Entering the 2012 season, Banuelos was the clear-cut No. 1 prospect in the Yankees system. But because of injuries that affected his performance on the field, Banuelos' stock severely dropped while other Yankees prospects, such as Gary Sanchez and Mason Williams, have done extremely well in the lower levels of the minor leagues.
