While Chicago Cubs right-hander Matt Garza may not pitch for the remainder of the season, general manager Jed Hoyer has said the 28-year-old is "likely to be a member of the Cubs in 2013," reports Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune:

"He's likely to be a member of the Cubs in 2013," he said. "And we're excited to have him. (Trading him) is the last thing we're thinking of. We're just trying to get this guy healthy."

With the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline approaching, the Cubs were reportedly looking to trade Garza. However, injury issues ended any speculation that he would be dealt at deadline time, and now the right-hander’s out indefinitely with a stress reaction in the back of his elbow.

Garza is under team control for one more season. Because Chicago was unable to trade him this summer, the expectation was that the club would look to deal him over the winter in an effort to expedite its rebuilding process.

However, with the injury it may prove difficult for the Cubs to move Garza this winter. Chicago may instead have to wait until he shows he’s healthy in 2013 before making a mid-season transaction.

Of course, the Cubs have also maintained throughout the process that they do have some interest in signing Garza to a contract extension.
