In a corresponding roster move, the Red Sox have recalled right-hander Clay Mortensen.
Padilla last appeared for the Red Sox on Sunday against the Minnesota Twins, when he gave up three runs on two hits and a walk without recording an out. He was then listed as unavailable to pitch Monday night due to a slight groin pull. At the time, Boston’s manager Bobby Valentine said the reliever would need at least a day off.
Over forty-one appearances with the Red Sox this season, Padilla has maintained an ERA of 4.62 with 9.9 SO/9 and 2.5 BB/9.
Mortensen has appeared in ten games for Boston this season, posting an ERA of 1.17 over twenty-three innings with 6.7 SO/9 and 2.7 BB/9. The 27-year-old has also logged thirty-seven and two-thirds innings with the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate, maintaining an ERA of 1.91.
