Houston outfielder J.D. Martinez will undergo hand surgery on Wednesday, ending his 2012 season.

Houston Astros outfield J.D. Martinez will undergo hand surgery on Wednesday that will sideline him for the remainder of the regular season, reports Brian McTaggert of MLB.com:

Martinez, 25, said he has been bothered by pain in the hand all season, but that recently it had recently become unbearable. The Wednesday operation will remove the "hook" in the hamate bone of his left hand in an attempt to repair a fracture of the small hand bone. The Astros hope that Martinez will recover from surgery in time to participate in winter ball, but it up in the air at the moment.

The second-year outfielder struggled at the plate in one hundred thirteen games this season, batting just .241/.311/.375 with fourteen doubles and eleven home runs.
